Student eats microwave pizza and sacrifices social life to pay off grandparents’ mortgage

These Houston-based grandparents felt blessed for having a thoughtful grandson, who scrimped and saved so that they could retire from work.

To save money for his grandparents, Stefun Darts, a full-time student at San Jacinto College and founder of the non-profit Caring Heart Youth, ate microwave pizza for six years.

On top of that, Darts sacrificed his teenage years and early adulthood by not having fun with friends or partying. He has also been working several jobs, TODAY reported.

Darts pinched and scraped not for himself, but to fulfill a childhood promise—to help his grandparents pay off the mortgage of their home.

His grandparents have been religiously paying the mortgage every month for over 20 years. It would take them another four years to pay off their house.

“I promised God in the second grade I would pay off you guys house and help you retire. A promise I would never break,” Darts wrote on Facebook. “I couldn’t stand you going to work at night, some nights I didn’t even sleep knowing it shouldn’t be like this.”

The promise was fulfilled on March 20, 2016, when he presented his grandparents with a US$15,000 check. There’s another surprise—he also gifted them with a trip to the Bahamas.

The gift left his grandparents in tears.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Darts’s grandmother, Marilyn Roberts, told KHOU. “To have a grandson like that is truly a blessing.”

“He’s a very special kid and I just love having him in my life,” said Darts’s grandfather, Cecil Roberts.

Darts’s mom, Stephanie Wyatt, wasn’t surprised by her son’s gesture. She knew Darts has always been a giving person even since he was a child.

As for Darts, he wasn’t doing this for the accolades, but “to see tears of joy, to experience that in a lifetime.”

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen, nor touched… but are felt by the heart. Even with this, I could never repay you for what you’ve done for me,” Darts wrote.

Such a wonderful grandson! The respect and gratitude Darts has toward his grandparents is truly inspirational.
