This baby was born with 7 fully grown teeth, and their doctor says it’s ‘a first’

It’s strange for a baby to be born with any teeth, but to be born with several teeth is unheard of! So when a baby in India was born with seven teeth, doctors were shocked, claiming it’s “a first of its kind.”

Baby Prayan Sharma, born on June 30, 2017, was admitted to an intensive care unit in Ahmedabad, western India, for an infection, right after his birth.

“As soon as my son was born he was moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) because he had an infection so my wife wasn’t able to breastfeed him at first,” said his father, Harish.

It was 10 days later that he was finally reunited with his parents.

Everything seemed normal till his mother, Nikita, 31, tried to breastfeed him.

“When he was eventually re-united with my wife and she tried to breastfeed him, she noticed something in his mouth,” Harish recalled.

The parents were shocked to discover their son’s big teeth. He had seven fully grown teeth in his lower jaw.

Harish, who works at a local software company, said: “We were completely surprised. We never knew a baby could be born with one tooth never mind seven teeth.”

The newborn’s teeth posed a hindrance to Nikita’s breastfeeding, and after noticing that they had become loose, the parents consulted a pediatric dentist.

Dr. Meet Ramatri, a pediatric dentist in Ahmedabad, said there are reports of newborn babies born with one or two teeth. But, he has never heard of seven.

“This is a first of its kind,” said Dr. Ramatri. “The teeth had to be removed to avoid any risk to the baby swallowing or choking on them.” Natal teeth or not the baby teeth that come later on, therefore they can cause overcrowding later on if they are not taken out.

Dr. Ramatri and his team conducted two separate operations under local anesthesia, as the baby was deemed too young to be given regular anesthesia.

They first removed four teeth, and carried on to extract the other three during the second operation. The seven teeth were all removed over a period of three days.

These kinds of teeth, known as natal teeth, are rare, and only appear in approximately one in every 3,000 births, according to the National Institute of Health.
