10 brilliant drawings that you haven’t seen—story behind #6 will send shivers down your spine

These inspirational drawings and paintings offer a window into a world of inner goodness, strength, and wonder. In these artworks, the artists share the beauty and virtues of the ancient meditation practice Falun Gong (Falun Dafa).

Falun Dafa is a genuine mind-body practice, totally free of charge, founded by Mr. Li Hongzhi in China in 1992. According to Chinese state-run media, an estimated 70 million–100 million Chinese citizens, including Communist Party members, practiced Falun Dafa in the 1990s.

On July 20, 1999, former Chinese Communist Party (CCP) head Jiang Zemin perceived Falun Dafa’s popularity a “threat,” and gave the order to “eliminate” the practice, which led to a nationwide crackdown on the peaceful practice.

Despite the pressure these practitioners face in contemporary China, they remain steadfast in their faith. The universal values of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance—which are not only the main tenets of Falun Gong but also the cornerstone of ancient Chinese culture—have inspired these artists to express the purity and peacefulness of the spiritual practice through their artworks.

1. Meditation

Eric Bess, oil

Eric Bess is an adjunct professor at Wittenberg University and is a professional painter.

Bless’s beautiful painting shows a man in tranquil meditation, which is Falun Dafa’s fifth exercise. This exercise requires sitting with the legs crossed in the “lotus position.” “Reinforcing Supernatural Powers,” as the exercise is called, is started by performing Buddha’s mudras, as depicted above.

2. Orchid Palm

Rose Pratt is a young artist from Cornwell, United Kingdom, and says on her One Wish Studio Facebook page, “One Wish is to create with a pure heart the images I see and portray something beautiful to share with the world.”

“I painted this for a Facebook competition run by Shen Yun Performing Arts,” Pratt told NTD. “As I was painting this I was worried that I wouldn’t make the deadline in time, I looked out the window and saw this beautiful half rainbow appear … it was like a message to see what I could do if I pushed that rainbow to the end.”

Pratt explained that the “Orchid Palm,” as depicted by the figure in the painting above, is used in classical Chinese dance. This watercolor piece took Pratt 10 hours to complete, and “to my joy, it came second in the competition.”

3. Golden Lotus

Rose Pratt, oil 2014/15

“This is my very first oil painting from 2014,” explained Pratt. “I’m reminded of the story of the lotus flower, raising up from muddy waters and open pure and clean. The gold color draws on that heavenly feeling I first felt when the emanating magic began to flow. Being able to follow this path of Falun Dafa is to express the beauty and magic around us and that wish coming to life.”

4. Ellen Meditating

Wattana Bo, pencil, pen & ink

“Ellen” can be seen in her yellow Falun Dafa T-shirt with hands conjoined in a position termed “jieyin.”

Artist Wattana Bo is from Kingston, New York. On his Facebook page, he wrote: “Perfect beauty is like pure water. It has no particular flavor.”

He told NTD that his art is “art with a purpose.” Bo has devoted himself to creating artworks with the spirit and tradition of the ancients to inspire and bring out the beauty in people’s hearts.

5. Guqin Player

Wattana Bo /Pencil, Pen&Ink

This beautiful drawing of a celestial maiden is inspired by Shen Yun Performing Arts, a New-York based Chinese dance and music company. The piece evokes the idea of a time in ancient China when music was played from the heart.

During China’s “Cultural Revolution” from 1966–1976, traditional values and the spiritual side of music and art were attacked and undermined. The communist movement propagating the “revolutionary” ideology led to the Chinese nation being disconnected from their cultural roots, and the essence of 5,000 years of Chinese culture was practically destroyed in a mere 10 years. Fortunately, there are people today like Bo, who are doing their part for traditional culture.

6. “I ate the meal so that you won’t be punished.”

Loc Minh Duong, watercolor

This watercolor is based on a true story. Ms. Bai, who’s depicted above, had been placed in solitary confinement for four years during her imprisonment, with no access to a restroom. Inmates were assigned to monitor her, and often abused her and urinated on her food, as reported by Minghui, a clearinghouse for firsthand accounts of the persecution of Falun Dafa practitioners.

Ms. Bai ate the food and told the inmates, “I ate the meal so that you won’t be punished.” Seeing this, the inmates were moved to tears.

Sadly, Ms. Bai, who was subject to extreme torture in Shanghai Women’s Prison, died on June 15, 2017.

7. Molly

Wattana Bo, pencil, pen & ink

This drawing expresses a meditator’s tranquility. It depicts a serene-looking girl, surrounded by lotus flowers, which are most likely drawn to represent her pure and worry-free heart.

8. Zhen Shan Ren

Wattana Bo, pencil, pen & ink

Remembering those who died for their faith, the piece also captures the spiritual steadfastness of the subjects who are each holding the three principles, pronounced “Zhen, Shan, Ren.”

9. Coming to group practice

Wattana Bo, pencil, pen & ink

Bo’s drawing above, which is accompanied by the poem below, shows that no matter how cold the harsh winter is, Falun Dafa practitioners are ever determined in their cultivation practice, and are even able to experience joy amidst hardship.

Winter Warm

Rain, wind, sleet or snow
elements that make the body cold;
Coming to Group Practice
My Heart (Xin) will always be warm.

10. Stop the persecution!

Wattana Bo, pencil, pen & ink

Wattana Bo is ever committed to raising awareness about the persecution of Falun Dafa practitioners, and he does so by using his talent to appeal to the world’s people through art.
