14-month-old from Surat becomes the youngest heart and kidney donor, saves two lives

When tragedy strikes and when life as you once knew is gone, thinking beyond one’s grief seems impossible. One can well imagine the plight of parents who have lost a precious child. However, the parents of a 14-month-old boy have to be lauded for their courageous and selfless act. They were able to rise above the loss of their son’s life and donate his organs giving a new lease of life to two children.

14-month-old Somnath Shah was playing with his sister at his residence when he fell down the stairs and was hit in the head. He was rushed to a local doctor who advised the parents that they take the unconscious child to the hospital. The CT-scan at the New Civil Hospital in Surat revealed that he suffered a brain haemorrhage and multiple fractures. The toddler was declared brain dead two days after the accident.

The hospital authorities decided to contact the city-based NGO, Donate Life, which promotes the cause of organ donation. It was not easy for the counsellors to convince the parents as he was their only son. But when the parents realised that donating his organs could save other precious lives, they eventually agreed. At 14 months old, Somnath became the youngest cadaver donor in Gujarat after his heart and kidneys were donated.

While his heart was flown to Mumbai and transplanted into a three-year-old girl who was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy, his kidneys were transplanted to a 15-year-old boy who had been on dialysis for the past 10 years. Somnath may have left the world, but the parents of the recipients will forever be indebted to him and his parents.
