It’s not too often you see a cop playing hopscotch with a little girl, is it? This slick police officer sure has a gentle touch and a big heart!
Huntington Beach Officers Zach Pricer and Scott Marsh were investigating a report regarding a suspicious vehicle in the area of Graham and Edinger when they encountered this homeless 11-year-old girl and her mother. They had no shelter besides the car they had been living out of.
While Officer Marsh was assisting the mother with housing arrangements, Pricer decided to put a smile on the little girl’s face by teaching her how to play hopscotch!
The young officer, who might have been 6 feet tall, showed off his (considerable) hopscotch skills playfully for the down-and-out 11-year-old.
“I had to check the welfare of the little girl, so I have to earn her trust and get her comfortable with me first,” Pricer told ABC News.
And it looked like Pricer won her over in the end. The little girl laughed when Pricer lost his balance, and even high-fived him after completing the game of hopscotch, or “copscotch,” as Pricer called it.
“She was very gracious,” said Pricer. “Despite having nearly nothing, she was offering to me everything she had to play with. She showed me her bubbles and her little pink shoes that were falling apart but that she still loved. It was amazing to see how thankful she was for what she did have.”
The adorable moment was captured on video by Pricer’s partner, who posted it to the Huntington Beach Police Department’s Facebook page. The post soon garnered over 53,000 likes and more than 3,000 positive comments!
“It’s the little things that matter the most,” netizen MXGaming commented.
“We have helped this family before. They have lived in their van for a while. Very nice and respectful mom and daughter. I am SO happy that they are getting lasting help! And the littler gesture of hopscotch with a cop will impact them for life! It is so AWESOME to see that!!” wrote Jess Spencer Ferguson.
“Thank you Huntington Beach Police for this. I cried. This is special to me. I been homeless before living in my car for three years. I had a nice cop that paid for a motel room for me for a week,” another Facebook user, Audie Contreras, wrote.
This 11-year-old girl might be living through a hard time with her mother, but the kind gesture from one caring public servant definitely made her day! These awesome officers do their very best to serve their community by giving back from the heart!
