India might be one of the fastest developing countries but there are quite a few shortcomings that need to be addressed. The biggest one being a parasite called corruption! Bribery is the most common form of corruption and over time many measures have been taken to curb that but the efforts went in vain. However, a Tamil Nadu based NGO came up with a unique solution by introducing zero rupee notes! That’s right rupees 0 notes! It looks like a normal note except for the denomination.
Vijay Anand, the founder of NGO 5th Pillar, came up with this idea of creating rupees 0 notes to fight corruption. He along with his team distributed these notes at railway stations, local markets, bus stands, signals and all such places where the common man might be asked for a bribe.
The note has all the usual components of the normal currency but it also carries the name and number of the NGO. The idea behind the note was to empower the citizens. The rupees 0 note spreads awareness about 5th Pillar and people don’t feel alone in their fight against corruption. The volunteers of the NGO have distributed almost 3 million such notes!
The note also carries a pledge “I promise to neither take nor accept a bribe.” Which tells that giving bribe is as big a crime as accepting it! Once Vijay Anand was stopped by a traffic police while heading to the airport. He knew there was no concrete reason behind the deed except asking for a bribe. He handed the rupee 0 note and told the police officer that he can contact the number in cases of corruption. He was let off without any questions asked!
His campaign has been carried out in schools as well! We hope to see more from the 5th pillar in the future and a substantial decrease in the cases of corruption and bribery!
I promise to neither take nor receive a bribe.
