Man sees baby in sweltering car and people ‘arguing over something.’ Suddenly he grabs the baby

A construction worker’s intuition kicked in particularly strong one morning, and he ended up saving a kidnapped baby that had an AMBER Alert issued.

Colin Blevin, a San Jose construction worker, initially considered calling in sick to stay at home and recuperate on this fateful day. He told PEOPLE: “My hip was hurting real bad. But I needed to get work done.”

Blevin arrived at 7 a.m. to work at Ciarra Construction in San Jose, when he spotted a Honda Accord blocking the entrance. He also noticed a couple of people arguing over something, but didn’t think much of it. However, he then asked the driver, Raymond Randy Gutierrez, who was not inside the car at this time but arguing with a woman, to move his car.

“He moved the car and I pulled in,” Blevin said. “The back door was cracked open and I saw a baby. I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t know initially the baby was in danger and there was an AMBER Alert.”

It was already getting hot, and Blevin’s first reaction was a baby shouldn’t be sitting in a sweltering hot car like that. He also noticed the clean-looking baby, and the dirty-looking man, and realized something wasn’t adding up. Blevin also noted the guy looked like he was on drugs.

After that, a lady, who was living next to the company’s yard, and later identified as Mamas Ramirez, approached Blevin and said that Gutierrez was allegedly trying to give her the baby.

“The lady tells me quietly, ‘Help me save this baby. You have to save this baby. The guy tried to give it to me.’ I looked into the car and there is this beautiful chunky baby looking at me. The baby [was] calm, clean, with a bottle on his chest. I thought, ‘What is going on here?’” said Blevin.

Blevin then went straight to Gutierrez and asked him whose baby it was.

“He said a lady gave him the car and left the baby in the car. And right away I thought that makes no sense. The baby was well taken care of and this guy was dirty, skinny and jittery. I thought, ‘There is no way the baby belongs to this man. There is no way this man should be in charge of a baby.’”

Blevin grabbed the baby seat holding the baby from the car, and told the kidnapper, “You are not leaving here with the baby.”

Blevin then called 911 before Gutierrez fled in the car but was later arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, kidnapping, child endangerment, and possession of stolen property.

Thanks to Blevin’s intuition and courage, he’s now a hero. “Everyone is saying what could have happened, and that is what scared me. I have been very emotional since it happened. When the cop said, ‘This is the AMBER Alert baby,’ I thought, ‘Are you kidding me?’ I was able to help a little kid and his family and that is a life highlight right there,” he said.

A local deputy police chief, Damon Wasson, spoke on the case. Apparently, the missing boy’s father had kept his car running in his driveway at 5 a.m. that morning, with his baby in the back, when he ran into the house to grab something. When he returned, the car and baby were gone.

Later, Gutierrez had allegedly approached Ramirez next to the construction site and tried to give her the baby and said that “he [didn’t] know what to do with babies,” said Wasson. “I just wish people could realize that there are bad folks out there. If it wasn’t for those folks stepping in, who knows how this thing could have turned out?”

Well, the main thing is that the baby was saved. Thank goodness for people like Blevin!
